ActiveMovie

The AVI player from Windows 95 has been replaced by ActiveMovie from the IE package (IE3+). ActiveMovie is simply a refinement of the AVI player because it can play AVIs as they stream, rather than having to spool the whole file into memory, even if that were virtual memory, before playing. It was part of the IE package, because streaming is essential for web-based files. As you may guess from the Active part of its title, this is an ActiveX control that can be called from within HTML pages, so AVIs can be embedded and played. Ironically, AVI is no longer to be the default multimedia file format for Windows. A new format called ASF is supported in Windows 98 with NetShow.
